Just because your pond is green, does not indicate an algae problem. Every day, many pond owners mistake watermeal infestations as being algae infestations and become frustrated when over-the-counter algaecides fail to rid their ponds of the green invaders. Telling Algae from Watermeal is pretty simple; Algae is microscopic and looks like green slime, Watermeal looks like green cornmeal.

What very few people understand is that watermeal and duckweed infestations are a "symptom" of larger problems. These infestations are commonly found in smaller ponds because only deeper, larger ponds can "turn over". Turning over is essential for ponds because it releases the nutrients and gasses that are trapped at the bottom of the pond that come from decaying plant and animal matter. The trapped nutrients and gasses are what duckweed and watermeal thrive on.

Chemicals such as Sonar and Reward can help bring an infestation under control, but they do nothing for the underlying problem, which in many cases is the pond not turning over. Fountain Aeration helps some, but delivering air bubbles to the bottom of the deeper areas of the pond will help the trapped nutrients and gasses surface and be released into the atmosphere, harmlessly.

If you already see green forming on your pond, you will most likely need to deploy several methods of control. Aeration will not kill the infestation. It will keep it from getting worse, however, and if correctly deployed, will prevent future infestations. A well planned combination of chemicals and deep aeration will fix most pond problems, not to mention fish grow larger, faster in well oxygenated ponds.

A lot of people choose chemicals as a method of keeping their watermeal and duckweed problems under control not knowing that electric aeration systems end up being cheaper in the long run. In many cases, treating a pond can cost upwards of $500 per season, whereas an electric aeration pump such as our HP-80 only consumes an average of $200 per year in electrical usage. That’s a substantial savings considering you save about $300 AND don’t have to mix chemicals, spray chemicals etc.

The "best" method we advise for optimal pond health is by use of Electric Pump Pond Aeration. The pump aeration systems start at just over $400.00 and use around $200 in electricity per year. They are high-quality and require very little maintenance. Of course sometimes electricity may not be an option for ponds in remote locations. For these situations Windmill Pond Aeration may be the way to go.
